ROOTS is an acronym for Relatives of Old Timers. The 45th Annual ROOTS Celebration is a daylong event inviting the community to join in festivities to celebrate the history and culture of African Americans, past and present, who contributed to the vitality of our City. The Celebration is a picnic venue with activities including music/dance/honors/intergenerational activities/senior’s free lunch. For the first time, a second stage will be hosted as an open mic and karaoke opportunity. Sponsors include NW Black Pioneers, Northwest African American Museum (NAAM), Black Heritage Society of WA State, Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Parks & Recreation and a host of community organizations. NAAM is adjacent to Jimi Hendrix Park and will provide free public tours.
JOIN BHS on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14 for a QUARTERLY MEMBERS and FRIENDS MEETING
The Board of Directors will share what’s new at BHS with partnerships, outreach and Collections. The program will include guests from Centralia, WA who are leading the 200th Birthday Celebration for its founder, a free black man, George Washington. Esther Mumford, local historian/author will share comments on her research of Mr. Washington. Also on the program are guests from the Museum of History & Industry to give an update for Seattle on the Spot: The Photographs of Al Smith exhibition, opening on November 18, 2017. A brief overview of BHS involvement at the 2017 Association of African American Museum’s Conference that was co-hosted this August by the new National Museum of African American History and Culture in DC.

SYNCOPATED CLASSIC: THE LEGACY OF FRANK D. WALDRON
BHS partners with the 5th Ave Theatre to welcome Seattle Guitarist and composer Greg Ruby to present the music and life of Seattle Jazz pioneer, Frank D. Waldron (1890-1955). Waldron never became as famous as his star students Quincy Jones or Buddy Catlett but Waldron’s presence reaches back to the earliest days of jazz in Seattle. In 1907, he set up shop at 1242 Jackson Street near the epicenter of Seattle’s burgeoning jazz district. Come out to the Ragtime pre performance Community Conversation at the 5th Ave Theatre – Studio E to learn more.

Join BHS for its first General Members & Friends Meeting of 2018. Special Guests are Chief of Police, Carmen Best and BHS will introduce you to the new NAAM/ Executive Director, LaNesha DeBardelaben. Also on the program is a short presentation by Leschi Elementary School students that shares the history and bicentennial celebration for George Washington, the African American founder of Centralia, WA.
Become a member at this meeting and your membership will extend through June, 2019.

Our guest is Sharon Nyree Williams, Executive Director at the CD Forum for Arts & Ideas. Ms. Williams will share information about her organization as an anchor tenant at Langston and their amazing creative visual arts programming.
Members will vote to approve amendments to the Constitution/Bylaws.
