FAQ
This Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page serves as a resource to address common inquiries regarding our programs, collections, events, and collaboration opportunities. We aim to provide clear and concise information to assist you in connecting with our initiatives and participating in our community.
Can I visit the BHS archive? Is there a fee?
Yes! Visits to the archive and Resource Center are scheduled by appointment. See the details on the Homepage.
No fee! The archive is held in public trust. It’s “your” free asset.
Can I schedule a group visit?
Think about the archive like a library. It’s a place to conduct research, see collections, and meet one-on-one with the collections team to ask questions and make inquiries.
What can I see at the archive?
The archive holds collections of photographs, memorabilia, oral histories, ephemera, and some vintage clothing and 3D objects that are related to the lives of Washington state Black people. Collections include topics on legacy, family, professions, sports, civic engagement, and more.
Can I order copies of photos held in the collections and/or use them in promotions?
Yes, you can request copies of photos. Personal, educational, and commercial use has its own Use Guidelines and fees. Generally, there is a fee to scan an image and deliver the requested resolution to you electronically. BHS will always hold the copyright and we will require that you credit our ownership.
* BHS will consider your use and may opt to waive a portion of the fees.
Does BHS store or warehouse items?
No. BHS does not store items outside of what it owns via donation with Deed of Trust.
How can I discuss a materials donation to the BHS archive?
BHS is always available to discuss what you might want to donate to enhance the collections that are held in perpetuity as a public asset. We consider items that are specific to Washington State Black History. Reach us by email or phone to discuss.
Does BHS accept monetary donations?
Yes, we do. Because BHS is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, your donation is considered tax deductible.
How can I become a BHS member?
BHS welcomes anyone to join as an Annual or Life Member. Memberships help to sustain best management and care for the archive as well as support for education and public programs. See the website Get Involved for the membership levels.
